Please backup your site before doing this update. The upgrade from 2.1 to 2.5 is a major upgrade, and involves data and file migration.
To upgrade a site from 2.1 to 2.7, you need to do the 2.1 to 2.5 upgrade first, and then the 2.7 upgrade.
The upgrade will keep all you photos, categories, galleries, comments and ratings. It will not preserve all your gallery settings and you will have to remake your menu items. Once the upgrade is done, you will be able to create a new profile, add in your settings, and this profile will be linked to all categories. It is likely most of the settings you can remember (I had the lightbox on, but I had comments and ratings off), but there are a few you will not remember (the right width for a gallery image was 540 pixels and the right height was 350 pixels). Please write down the few settings you won’t remember, so you can add them in after.
The upgrading process for versions released in the past 18 months is a lot smoother, with almost everything being done automatically. Once you are on the lastest versions, upgrading is a much easier process.
Step 1: Download the latest com_igallery_2_5.zip file from the downloads page.
Step 2: Install the file through the Joomla installer, this will install the 2.5 files.
Step 3: Download this upgrader file, unzip it, and copy it into administrator/components/com_igallery.
Step 4: Go to the Ignite Gallery 2.5 menu item in the components menu. You will probably see a list of your categories, but with some errors, or values missing. You will notice the url is index.php?option=com_igallery. Change the url so it is index.php?option=com_igallery&task=upgrade and hit enter.
If all has gone well, you will see this text:

If your server times out during this step, please wait a few seconds, then refresh the page. The upgrade will start where it left off.
Step 5: You can now go into the component, choose the profiles heading, create a new profile, add in your settings, and save the profile. This profile will be linked to all categories. You can create more profiles if you want. When you click on the category name you can choose what profile the category links to.
Step 6: You will need to re-create your gallery menu items with Joomla’s menu manager.
Step 7: If you use the Ignite Gallery plugin or module, you will need to uninstall/ reinstall these. Uninstalling the plugin or module will not remove any galleries.
Once you are happy things are working, you can delete the images/stories/igallery folder. The images are now kept in images/igallery. This is just to save server space, you don’t need to do this.
Please delete the administrator/components/com_igallery/upgrader.php file as well.
